Keepin’ It Real with Felipe Luciano

Join us on a captivating mini-documentary as we embark on a journey through Felipe's life, tracing the events that shaped him. Starting from his early days in East Harlem, NYC, we witness how he discovered his passion for poetry and community through The Young Lords, eventually leading him to host the renowned radio show "Latin Roots" and win numerous Emmy awards. Felipe's career has been driven by a profound sense of purpose.

During our interview, we delve into the injustices faced by African Americans and Latinos in the 1970s and how similar challenges persist in contemporary times. Felipe emphasizes the value of embracing diverse cultures, fostering mutual understanding, respect, and love.

Interestingly, this interview holds special significance within my family's history. My grandfather, Ralph Mercado, shared a wonderful bond with Felipe as fellow Afro-Latinos, propelling their creative pursuits to new heights. Similarly, my mother, Debbie Mercado, found mentorship from Felipe, which has now been passed on to me and my siblings. It's a testament to the enduring connections that span generations, cultivating communal prosperity and lasting wealth within our community.
